Cannabis Public Use Laws in New York

Where can you legally consume cannabis in New York? A guide to public use rules and restrictions.

New York's cannabis law generally allows adults to consume cannabis in any location where tobacco smoking is permitted. However, there are significant restrictions. Cannabis cannot be consumed inside vehicles, on school grounds, in workplaces (unless employer permits), on federal property, or in most public parks and beaches managed by NYC Parks. Private residences and designated consumption lounges are the safest legal options. Building landlords and HOAs can prohibit smoking but cannot ban non-smoke consumption methods like edibles. Always be respectful of those around you when consuming.
